Pruning done right is a health intervention, not a haircut. We prune for structure — removing crossing branches, correcting codominant stems before they become a splitting hazard, and raising canopies away from rooflines and driveways — following ANSI A300 pruning standards rather than just cutting whatever looks overgrown.
Timing matters more than most homeowners realize. We schedule most structural pruning during the dormant season, which reduces stress on the tree and makes it easier to see the branch structure clearly. Flowering trees get pruned on a schedule that protects next season's blooms rather than cutting them off by accident.
We never top trees. Topping — cutting main branches down to stubs — is still requested from time to time, usually by homeowners who've seen it done elsewhere, but it's one of the worst things you can do to a tree: it triggers weak, fast-growing regrowth that's more hazardous than what you started with, not less. We'll explain the better alternative for whatever concern is driving the request.
